How to Reinstall the PlayStation 3 System Software After Replacing the Hard Drive or Adding an SSD

🎮 Why the PS3 Asks for the System After the Swap

On the PlayStation 3, the operating system (the firmware) lives on the hard drive itself. When you replace the drive with a bigger one or an SSD, the console powers on, sees the drive is empty and shows a message asking for the update file. It isn’t a fault: it’s the normal way to prepare a new drive.

In this guide you’ll see the official method, which is the simplest, Safe Mode for when the normal method doesn’t work, and the traps that make the PS3 say it can’t find the file — it’s almost always the USB stick format or the file name.

⚠️ What Happens to Your Data

The new drive comes empty. Everything on the old drive — saves, installed games, trophies not yet synced, videos, settings — is not copied over automatically. So the right order is:

1. If the old drive still works: make a full backup before the swap (explained in the backup section).
2. Sync your trophies: in Trophy Collection, press triangle and choose to sync with PlayStation Network.
3. PS Plus subscribers: saves uploaded to online storage stay in the cloud and can be downloaded later.
4. Old drive failing: a backup through the console may not be possible. Saves use a PS3-specific format that’s hard to recover on a PC.

💽 Which Hard Drive or SSD the PS3 Accepts

The PS3 formats the drive by itself during installation, so there’s nothing to prepare on the drive beforehand. If it came from another device, whatever was on it will be erased.

📁 Preparing the USB Stick with the PS3 System

1. Use a USB stick of 32 GB or smaller (larger ones need an extra step, explained in the next section).
2. Format it as FAT32: in File Explorer, right-click the stick → Format → File system FAT32 → Start. This erases everything on it.
3. At the root of the stick, create a folder named PS3 and, inside it, a folder named UPDATE — in capital letters.
4. Download the system file from the official PS3 update page (version 4.93 as of September 2026) and save it inside PS3\UPDATE.
5. Make sure the file is named exactly PS3UPDAT.PUP.

The final path must look like this (replace E: with your stick’s drive letter):

E:\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP

🧩 64 GB Stick or Bigger: How to Get FAT32

Windows’ format window only offers FAT32 on sticks of up to 32 GB; on larger ones you only get exFAT and NTFS — and the PS3 reads neither. The simplest fix is to use a smaller stick. If the big one is all you have, you can create a 32 GB partition on it with diskpart:

🔧 Installing the New Drive in the Console

1. Turn the PS3 off from the menu, wait for the red light and unplug the power cable.
2. Open the drive bay cover (it varies by model — see the table above).
3. Remove the screw holding the caddy and carefully slide the caddy out.
4. Take the old drive out of the caddy (4 screws) and mount the new one in the same position.
5. Slide the caddy all the way back in without forcing it, then replace the screw and the cover.

✅ Installing the System: the Official Method

1. Connect the controller to the PS3 with the USB cable (without the cable, the controller may not be recognized on this screen).
2. Turn the PS3 on normally. With the new drive, a message appears asking for storage media with the update data.
3. Plug the USB stick into one of the console’s USB ports.
4. Press START and SELECT at the same time, as the screen tells you.
5. The PS3 formats the new drive and installs the system. It takes 5 to 15 minutes.
6. At the end it restarts and opens the initial setup: language, time zone, date and time.

If the screen says it couldn’t find the update data, go back to Step 1 and check the FAT32 format, the folder names and the file name. If it still fails, move on to Safe Mode.

🛟 Safe Mode: the PS3 Recovery Mode

1. With the PS3 fully off (red light), hold the power button.
2. You’ll hear one beep (the console turns on), then a second beep after about 5 seconds and, after about 10 seconds, a double beep. Only release at the double beep.
3. The screen asks you to connect the controller with the USB cable and press the PS button.
4. The recovery menu appears.

For a new drive, choose 6. System Update with the USB stick plugged in and confirm. If the console turns off instead of showing the menu, you let go too early — try again holding until the double beep.

⚙️ After the Installation

1. Complete the initial setup: language, time zone, date, time and user name.
2. Set up the internet in Settings → Network Settings.
3. Sign in to your PlayStation Network account to recover your digital game licenses and download them again.
4. If you made a backup, restore it now (next section).
5. Sync your trophies and download game updates, which don’t come with the system.

☁️ Backup and Restore on the PS3 Itself

The PS3 has a built-in utility that copies saves, installed games and settings to an external drive or USB stick:

• The external drive must be FAT32 and have at least as much free space as what’s used on the PS3.
• It can take a long time — from minutes to hours, depending on how much data you have.
• Restore on the same console: some saves are protected and won’t work on another PS3.
• During restore, anything already on the new drive is replaced by the backup.

🚨 If Nothing Works

1. Try another USB stick, ideally a small one from a known brand — some newer models aren’t read by the PS3.
2. Use another USB port on the console (the one closest to the disc drive is usually the most reliable).
3. Download the file again: an interrupted download creates a corrupted file with the right name.
4. Put the old drive back: if the PS3 works with it, the problem is the new drive (defect or incompatibility).
5. If not even the old drive works, the problem may be the console itself (drive, board or power supply) — then it’s worth a repair shop.

🚀 Making the PS3 Faster After the Swap

• Install games to the drive when the game offers that option: loading gets much shorter than running straight from the Blu-ray.
• Rebuild Database (Safe Mode option 4): if the menu gets slow over time, rebuilding the database usually fixes it. It deletes messages and playlists, but keeps games and saves.
• Free space: keep at least 10% of the drive free for installs and updates.
