Install Windows Drivers Without Paid Software: the Complete Guide

From the manual route (Windows Update) to the automatic one (SDIO, free and open-source) — without falling for a paid or ad-stuffed “driver updater”.

RC
Let’s see how to install and update Windows drivers using only free and open-source tools, without paying for any “driver updater”. I’m Ronaldo Cardoso from Tecnologia Moderna — technical, honest and always free content.
Quick summary

Straight to the point — drivers without spending a cent:

  • Always start with Windows Update (Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates).
  • For whatever is left, use SDIO (sdi-tool.org) — free, open-source, scans and installs automatically.
  • pnputil does not download new drivers — it only manages (lists, exports, installs) what is already on the PC.
  • Avoid paid or ad-heavy “driver updaters” such as Driver Booster — you don’t need them.
  • Combine the three methods: Windows Update first, SDIO for the rest, pnputil to manage and export afterwards.
Free, and without installing junk on your PC

🛠️ Install Windows Drivers Without Paid Software

A question I get a lot goes like this: “some hardware on my PC has no driver, or the driver is outdated — do I need to pay for one of those ‘driver updater’ programs I see in every ad?” The short answer is no. In this guide I show three completely free and safe ways to fix it, from the simplest one (which Windows already handles by itself) to an open-source tool that searches and installs everything automatically for you.

Motherboard components that need drivers
Short version: start with Windows Update (built in, safest). If any driver is still missing, use SDIO (Snappy Driver Installer Origin) — free, open-source, from sdi-tool.org — which scans the PC and installs whatever is missing in a few clicks. Avoid any paid or aggressively advertised “driver updater”.

No fluff

✅ Straight Answer: Do You Need to Pay for This?

No. Windows itself solves most cases on its own through Windows Update, and for the rest there is a free, open-source tool (public code that anyone can audit) called SDIO that searches for and installs missing or outdated drivers automatically.

Paid “driver update” programs — the best known being IObit’s Driver Booster — are not necessary and, in many cases, push exaggerated “outdated drivers” alerts just to convince you to buy the full version. A driver that works well and has no known problem does not need to be replaced by a newer one just because it exists.

Before you download anything

⚠️ Beware of Generic “Driver Updaters”

Many of the “update your drivers automatically” programs you see in ads or pop-ups follow the same script: they scan the PC, show a scary list of “outdated drivers” or “critical problems found”, and only unlock the fix after you pay for a licence. Some also come with disguised adware (extra programs installed without clear warning, browser toolbars and so on).

That doesn’t mean every driver program is bad — only that it’s worth being suspicious of any tool that forces urgency alerts and charges you to “fix” something that often isn’t even a real problem.

An important difference: SDIO, the main recommendation in this guide, is open-source — the code is public, anyone can audit what it does, and there’s no fine print hiding a charge later on.
How to know a driver is missing

🔎 Signs of a Missing or Broken Driver

SymptomLikely driver behind it
No Wi-Fi networks listed, or no network icon at allWireless adapter (Wi-Fi) or Ethernet
Screen stuck at low resolution, no brightness controlGraphics (GPU) — Windows is using the basic display adapter
No sound, or “No audio output device is installed”Audio (Realtek, Intel SST, AMD, etc.)
Touchpad works but without gestures or scrollingTouchpad / precision touchpad driver
“Unknown device” or “PCI Device” with a yellow “!”Chipset, card reader, sensors or other motherboard components
Bluetooth toggle missing from quick settingsBluetooth adapter

All of these appear clearly in Device Manager, which is exactly where Method 2 starts.

Always the first step

1️⃣ Method 1: Windows Update (the safest)

Before any external tool, always check whether Windows itself can fix it — it’s the safest route because the drivers come straight from Microsoft or the manufacturer, already validated:

  1. Open Settings (Windows key + I)
  2. Go to Windows Update
  3. Click Advanced options
  4. Open Optional updates
  5. Check the Driver updates section — if anything is listed, tick it and install
Laptop showing a system update screen

Many cases of hardware “without a driver” or with an outdated one are solved by this alone, without installing any extra program. To make sure the PC is really up to date, see also how to tell whether Windows is really up to date.

To fix one specific item

2️⃣ Method 2: Device Manager

If one specific piece of hardware shows a yellow “!” or simply doesn’t work, you can try fixing it directly, without scanning the whole PC:

  1. Right-click the Start menu
  2. Select Device Manager
  3. Find the problematic hardware (usually with a warning icon)
  4. Right-click it → Update driver
  5. Choose “Search automatically for drivers”

Windows searches both locally and on Windows Update for a driver compatible with that specific hardware. If a recent update made something worse, the same window has a Roll Back Driver button (Properties → Driver tab) that returns to the previous version.

The official source

🏭 Manufacturer Websites: When They’re Worth It

For some components, the manufacturer’s own site is still the best source — especially graphics cards and laptops with special keys or power management:

ComponentWhere to get it
NVIDIA / AMD / Intel graphicsThe official site of each brand (the driver there is usually newer than the one on Windows Update)
Laptops (Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer, ASUS, Samsung…)The brand’s support page — search by the model or serial number on the label underneath
Desktop motherboardsThe board manufacturer’s page, “Support” or “Downloads” section, by exact model
Printers and scannersThe printer maker’s page — Windows often installs only a basic driver
Download only from the official domain of the brand. Sites with names like “drivers-free-download” are exactly where adware and fake installers usually hide.

🚀 Method 3: SDIO — Automatic Search and Install

When the two native methods don’t solve everything — or when you want to set up several PCs at once without hunting drivers one by one — the right tool is SDIO (Snappy Driver Installer Origin). It’s a free, open-source program available at sdi-tool.org that does what its name promises: it scans the PC, finds missing or outdated drivers and installs everything automatically in a few clicks.

USB flash drive plugged into a laptop
SDIO is portable — nothing needs to be installed on the system, you just extract it and run the executable. That makes it easy to carry on a USB stick and use on several different PCs, including freshly formatted machines.
Copy and follow

📋 Complete SDIO Step by Step

  1. Go to sdi-tool.org and download the program (SDIO) together with the SDI Indexes (the packages with the driver database)
  2. Extract the downloaded file into any folder
  3. Run SDIO.exe — no installation needed, it runs straight away (portable)
  4. Wait for the program to scan the PC — it lists missing or outdated drivers, each with a checkbox
  5. Review the list and click Install — SDIO downloads and installs everything that is ticked, automatically
  6. Restart the PC if any driver asks for a restart to finish
The first run downloads large indexes (the driver database), so it may take a while depending on your connection. If you build or format PCs where no internet is available, there is an offline version of SDIO with the indexes already included — download it in advance wherever you do have a connection.

A good habit: before letting SDIO install anything, create a restore point (search “Create a restore point” in the Start menu). If a driver misbehaves, going back takes a couple of minutes.

No searching — it only manages what’s there

💻 Advanced Bonus: pnputil for Terminal Fans

If you prefer the command line, there’s also pnputil, a tool built into Windows (nothing to download). One point must be crystal clear: unlike SDIO, pnputil does not download any driver from the internet — it only manages the “stock” of drivers already on the PC (the so-called Driver Store).

CommandWhat it does
pnputil /enum-drivers Lists the drivers already stored in the Windows driver store.
pnputil /add-driver path\driver.inf /install Installs a driver from an .inf file you already have saved on the PC.
pnputil /scan-devices Makes Windows detect new hardware and look for a driver — but it still relies on Windows Update behind the scenes.
Terminal window with commands

In other words: pnputil is great for managing drivers you already have — for example, exporting the drivers of an old PC before formatting, as I showed in the driver backup guide with PnPUtil — but it does not replace SDIO or Windows Update when it comes to finding and downloading a missing driver.

Terminal (Administrator) — export every driver to a folder
pnputil /export-driver * D:\DriversBackup
The complete flow, done right

🔗 Combining the Three Methods

In practice, the flow that makes the most sense is using the three methods in sequence, each one solving a part:

  1. Windows Update first — solves most cases without anything external.
  2. SDIO for whatever is left — scans and automatically installs what Windows Update didn’t pick up.
  3. pnputil when the goal is different: managing or exporting drivers that are already installed, especially useful before changing disks or formatting (see also how to move files and programs to a new PC to cover the full migration).
If something doesn’t go as planned

🐛 Common Errors and How to Fix Them

ProblemWhat to do
SDIO finds no missing driversNormal if Windows Update already solved everything — no need to force installing something that already works.
The first SDIO run is very slowThat’s the download of the driver indexes (database) — consider getting the offline version in advance if your internet is limited.
Hardware still has no driver after SDIOIt may be a very specific or very recent component — download it directly from the part manufacturer’s site.
I confused SDIO with another, paid programAlways check that the site is sdi-tool.org — it is the only official SDIO address, and the program is completely free.
pnputil returns “access denied”Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as Administrator before running the command.
A new driver caused crashes or a black screenDevice Manager → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, or use the restore point you created.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Do I need to pay for any program to install drivers?

No. Windows Update already solves most cases for free, and for the rest there’s SDIO, which is completely free and open-source.

Is SDIO safe?

Yes — it’s open-source, meaning the code is public and can be audited by anyone. Always download it from the official site, sdi-tool.org.

Is Driver Booster the same as SDIO?

No. Driver Booster (by IObit) is not open-source and has a paid version. SDIO is free and open-source — they are different programs, don’t mix them up when downloading or recommending.

Does pnputil download drivers from the internet like SDIO?

No. pnputil only manages (lists, exports, installs) drivers that are already on the PC. The tools that search and download automatically are SDIO and Windows Update.

Do I need internet to use SDIO?

The first time, yes, to download the driver indexes. Where no internet is available, there’s an offline version of SDIO with the indexes already included.

After using SDIO, do I still need Windows Update?

Not necessarily, but it doesn’t hurt — the two can coexist perfectly. Always check Windows Update first, since it’s Microsoft’s most direct route.

Does this work for any hardware, including older boards?

SDIO covers a very wide range of hardware, including older parts, but very rare or specific hardware may not be in the index — in that case, the manufacturer’s website is still the most reliable source.
